Ask any experienced agronomist where a season is won or lost, and they will point at the seedling tray. Everything that happens after transplant — irrigation, fertilisation, pest management — depends on the genetic quality and health of the plant you started with.
For smallholders in Zimbabwe, access to certified, disease-free seedlings has historically been a bottleneck. Farmers often propagate their own or buy from informal nurseries with unknown seed provenance. The result is variable germination, uneven crops, and — too often — an early outbreak of a preventable disease.
Our nursery service was built to close this gap. We produce hardened seedlings of tomato, chilli, cabbage, onion and leafy greens under controlled conditions, using certified seed and integrated pest management from day one.
Farmers who switch to certified seedlings routinely report faster establishment, more uniform crops, and a longer productive harvest window. On tomato in particular, we have seen marketable yield jumps of 20 – 40% simply from starting with a better plant.
Good seedlings do not guarantee a good harvest. But poor seedlings guarantee a bad one. That is a decision worth making deliberately.
